LCEF Awards Nearly $14,000 in Grants to Lake Dallas ISD Educators

Lake Dallas High School & Lake Dallas Middle School Awarded $9285.00 for “Classic Learning Core”

The Classic Learning Core grant, written by Mike Cromis, will use classic success literature to promote self determination in a group setting while using technology as the communication medium. An integrated program will be presented to the students over the semester using the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Teens material.  The core groups created in the program will meet in small groups face to face, as well as in a virtual meeting room designed for them specifically. The goal is for the students to set goals and plan their futures with education as a foundational piece to their success.

Shady Shores Elementary receives $575.64 for ESL Reader’s Theater Program

This grant, written by Kathy Dixon, April Mack, and D’Lynn Vanderwater, will address the needs of the ESL students at Shady Shores Elementary. The implementation of an ESL Reader’s Theater program will provide their second language learners with an opportunity to put into practice many of the first grade English Language Arts TEKS.  Using the multi-leveled reader’s theater tests will allow readers of all levels to participate with confidence by reading instructional-level materials, practicing fluency, and presenting with appropriate volume, rate, and phrasing in a non-threatening atmosphere.
Corinth Elementary Kindergarten awarded $2000.00 for Leveled Readers
Across the Lake Dallas Independent School District in the last several years, it has been addressed that reading instruction needs to begin in kindergarten to ensure success on the third grade reading TAKS assessment. To address that issue in early childhood, kindergarten students now have objectives for reading/language arts that require small group guided reading materials. With this grant, Corinth Elementary kindergarten teachers will be able to purchase reading level materials needed to teach these objectives effectively.
Lake Dallas High School Special Education Department awarded $1920.00
The purpose of the LDHS Special Education Department’s grant is to initiate a reading assistance program for students who require oral administration. The objective is to assist Special Education students to increase both their independence, as well as their reading skills. The Kurzweil 3000 program will enable educators to provide differentiated instruction without having to differentiate the curriculum. This technology will be used as an intervention to close the achievement gap between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers.
